Remembrance Day and the USS Tulip disaster
By a strange coincidence both events share the same date – the 11th November.
Our Camp namesake, Ensign John Davis, was a sailor on the steam-screw gunboat USS Tulip when, on the 11th November, 1864, off Ragged Point, Virginia, the vessel’s starboard boiler exploded . Of the crew of 57, Davis was one of only 8 survivors.
